The map then fell in to the hands from the students. From that point on, all 5 from the students (called the Waldos) would meet everyday after class at (yes you guessed it), 4.20pm! They would then smoke copiously before venturing to the forest armed with the treasure map, trying to find the lost grow.

They searched for weeks! Though they never found the gold, they continued to fulfill everyday with their code good name for smoking cannabis as “420”. Eventually, this was used as being a term for anything cannabis related.

The original Waldos. Within the 90’s High Times caught wind of this term and it’s been commonly used around the globe since. The origin of 4/20 originates from a team of Californian high school students who called themselves the “Waldo’s.” They could meet every single day at 4.20pm with a statue of chemist Louise Pasteur to get out a cannabis crop and smoke joint after joint in the quest for the weed.

Originally the group would say “420-Louis” his or her code to schedule a meeting. Eventually they dropped the “Louis” since they found themselves using the term “420” to explain vhuaqe marijuana related. In 2012 among the group members, Steve Capper, told The Huffington Post: “We would remind one another within the hallways we had been supposed to meet up at 4.20.

“It originally started off 4.20-Louis, and we eventually dropped the Louis. “We’d meet at 4.20 and acquire in my old ’66 Chevy Impala, and of course, we’d smoke instantly and smoke entirely out to Point Reyes and smoke and the whole time we were available. We made it happen week after week but we never actually found the patch.”

They became known as the “Waldos” because they met in a wall. Among the group members, Dave Reddix, became friends with all the bassist from the Grateful Dead and the band is said to have help popularise the term among their fan base. A reporter from the High Times magazine – an authority on – took notice of the term and 420 soon became known worldwide as code for marijuana.
